Bengal’s great contributing to Bollywood, Mithun Chakraborty, has been conferred with the country’s 3rd highest award, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, himself a great pioneer in film making, even as the Prime Minister Narendra Modi called him a “Cultural Icon”.

This is such a big thing for a person who rose from footpath…from a blind lane in Kolkata… he is now being awarded with the most prestigious award. I could not have imagined this. For the unversed, Mithun Chakraborty made his Bollywood debut with Mrinal Sen's Mrigayaa (1976), earning the National Film Award for Best Actor for his stellar performance. He rose to fame and became a household name with his iconic role in the 1982 film Disco Dancer, a massive box-office hit.
